Aiken County Teacher of the Year:

2013-2014 Elizabeth Supan

Model Programs:

Several schools in Aiken County are recognized statewide and nationally for implementing model programs in the arts, middle school education, physical education, science education, athletics, community service initiatives, etc.   These honors are attributed to the hard work of accomplished school administrators, teachers, students, and parents.   Recognitions include:  The Verner Award, Palmetto's Finest, Blue Ribbon Candidate, National School of Excellence, Principal of the Year, Milliken Family Foundation National Educators' Award, State Teacher of the Year, Service Learning, State Agriculture Awards, Vocational Education Awards, State Band Competitions, and others.   Our teachers amass over a half million dollars annually through writing educational grants, including grants provided by the Public Education Partners(PEP).   Considering all competitive grants, the school district accumulates over $1.2 million annually.

Distance learning was made available through a $241,000 grant from the Governor's Technology Initiative.   Also, a $285,000 state grant was awarded to set up a tape and delay television center as one of a few in the state. An additional $257,000 grant was awarded to expand distance education to a middle school and an alternative school.   This grant expands our educational partners to include Allendale County Public Schools, University of South Carolina - Departments of Mathematics and Science Marine Biology, the University of South Carolina-Aiken, and the Governor's School for Arts and Humanities.   The District offers on an average twenty courses a semester and serves approximately two hundred students.   This program serves as a model for the State Department of Education and distance education throughout the state of South Carolina, and received national recognition through the Smithsonian Institute, Computer World Award.
